Messenger of Fear Michael Grant Books

I'm a bit of a latecomer to Michael Grant (I only vaguely payed attention to Animorphs) and in all honesty problem need to read 'grow-up' books. nonetheless I jumped on a bandwagon to read this latest piece Messenger of Fear.

Its quite different to what I expected. The focus of the story is a sort of mythological action romp about judgement and the afterlife. The main character is a bewildered young lass trying to determine what the heck is going on as a 'Messenger' shows her the ropes of his reaper-like role.

The story is somewhat brief and I felt Grant relied heavily on the allure of his mystics and a solid ending twist, rather than relate-able characters, although this was alright for a short-term escapist hour. I confess while the story was technically good I was disappointed at not picking up a novel on par with the Gone series, with equal intrigues.

Messenger of Fear Michael Grant Books Reviews

Great story. Can't wait till the next book comes out. Very different from Gone series and perhaps for the slightly older teen.
I loved the book. I recommend this book to be read by all ages. Story was easy to read and understand. I have read all of Michael Grant books. Waiting fir his next book.
I enjoyed it quite a lot with an unexpected twist. It was very detailed which makes it one of my fav books of all time. I am so glad that there's a second book, thank glob! >D
I was really expecting more from this book. I love the Gone series and was hoping this would be a fast paced book that drew me in. However, it was slow to start and didn't really grab my attention.
First time I have been disappointed by Mr Grant. This book is more 'goosebumps' than 'gone'....perhaps it's just me but I found the whole idea deeply unbelievable and predictable once the first few chapters were done. I didn't like the punitive message this story had and the grisly details seemed pretty gratuitous.
An excellent read, for those of you who prefer brevity. The issues that are examined within, as well as the over-arching question of morality and justice, are thought-provoking and linger in my mind. The characters are interesting enough, but there is still a great air of mystery surrounding them, which leaves a lot of room for growth and exposition in later stories.

This story, in some ways, is darker than the also excellent Gone series. In this story, the protagonist is more or less an observer for most of it, but she gets involved with extraordinary powers that are beyond her control, and, indeed, control her. The mechanics of this strange new reality probe the mind and explore the darker aspects of human nature while portraying people at their worst moments, whether they are consumed by unimaginable fear or are knowingly doing wrong without reason. Justice is delivered with absolute finality, but not necessarily without remorse, allowing the reader to relate to and even sympathize with the characters. In addition, the revelations at the end of the story make sense and explain much about the Messenger himself, for those who are able to look deeper into the story. It is a much more purely mental anguish than the physical strife and suffering of the FAYZ, and I think the author pulls it off well.

That said, this story is disappointingly short (I finished it in about 6 hours) and I crave more from this first installment. It may be a long time before we see a sequel. I just hope that it provides much more content to sate my voracious literary appetite.
Book #141 Read in 2015
Messenger of Fear by Michael Grant

This is the first book in a young adult fantasy series. Mara is with a young man who is seemingly the Messenger of Fear. He judges people who have done wrong and if they play his game and lose, he rains a horrible punishment down upon them. Mara is apparently in training as a future Messenger of Fear. This book has some violent parts to it but it is an engaging read that will hook both high school students (girls and boys) and adults alike.
