April 1193.

England's King Richard Lionheart languishes in a German prison, and treason scents the air. Richard's younger brother, John, seizes Windsor Castle, and Dowager Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine summons her trusted personal "queen's man," Justin de Quincy, to do the impossible - mediate a truce with her rebel son.

Amid such fateful events, the murder of a Welsh peddler's daughter seems small. But the cruel demise of the beautiful Melangell so troubles Justin that not even a threatened French invasion can keep him from investigating her death. Yet can he bring Melangell"s craven killer to justice?

Cruel as the Grave Justin de Quincy Mysteries Book 2 edition by Sharon Kay Penman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

The time is still 1193, and the fate of Richard the First remains uncertain, while unrest grows in England. The hero's is the Qieen's Man and he is tasked with missions by the Queen, while investigating the murder of the daughter of a peddler. The two story lines have little relation to each other, what we have here is an excellent book of historical fiction which happens to include a murder. The latter allows the author to display her profound knowledge of the England of the late XII Century.

I rated this book four stars because the murder line was somewhat simplistic and I would have preferred the author to devote more space to the political events of the period. These were extensive with ample room for drama and plots as Prince John tried to buttress his position to succeed Richard. That said, this is book id worth buying in spite of its its somewhat high price.

Cruel as the Grave Justin de Quincy Mysteries Book 2 edition by Sharon Kay Penman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Not sure why some of the reviews were so critical. These were not meant to be the epic, long novels that she has written previously. I think stretching herself into mystery writing while keeping it in the same time period was an admirable move. They are rich with detail and Justin de Quincy is completely out of her imagination. I personally adore the character and I like these books. More light reading when you need a break from the large volumes of historical fiction I usually read.
Excellent historical novel which made the time period come alive for me.
I have made it a quest to read everything Sharon Kay Penman has written. I for some reason had put off reading the Medieval Mysteries. Now I am so glad I did for it gives me a few more of her marvelous works to enjoy. Rich in historical and fictitious characters so real that they can be touched with the mind and a plot that keeps pages turning this is a truly satisfying read that begs to continue the series!
A delightful mix of royal intrigue and common murder, the queen's man is on the case. A strong addition to a strong series. And blessings above, there are more to read.
Cruel as the Grave is one of four Justin de Quincy mystery books set in Medieval times in England. Justin is a knight in the service of Queen Eleanor. Sharon Penman's historical knowledge comes through in the settings and characters developed in the books. Her plots are lively and as Justin "solves the crime" the reader is entertained with the various twists and turns of the mystery. These books are a pleasure to read..less involved than her regular historical books..as a light diversion.
I thoroughly enjoyed this second novel about Justin de Quincy, who we first met in Penman's The Queen's Man, referring to Justin's career as aide to Queen Eleanor, mother of Richard the Lion-Hearted and Prince John. It is 1193 and Richard is being held for ransom. While Eleanor tries to raise the money and keep John from a treasonous grab for the throne, Justin gives her invaluable assistance and also solves a murder closer to home.
Penman brings the 12th century to life with details about the everyday existence of people as they go about their business. Her style is wonderful, flowing easily and beautifully, and she writes well for different characters -- the conversations with Prince John and Justin's enemy/ally Durand fairly sizzle with malice and innuendo.
A notable undercurrent in this novel is the relationship between parents and children, and we see the consequences of familial dysfunction in the case of Justin and his estranged father, the two murder suspects and their bullying patriarch, and Prince John and his politically astute mother.
This is a terrific novel and I can't wait to read more of this series -- Justin de Quincy is a fun protagonist and Eleanor and John and Durand are compelling historical figures who jump right off the page. Lovely.
Sharon Kay Penman is, I think, one of if not the best writer of historically based, honest, historical fiction living today. Her several series about the Plantagenets, all huge but engrossing, are all worth reading for those who love historical fiction and also want the truth.

Her other, smaller series (smaller in both length of books and number of books) are the historical mystery series which Penman emphasizes ARE not as historically accurate as her others. The main characters Eleanor of Aquitaine, John Count of Mortain, her youngest son, and Richard the LionHearted, King of England and many others, as well as the basic plot outline and setting are based truthfully and historically but for the first time her main character and some others are fictional. In her afterwards she clarifies "who is who and what is what" which not all authors (I'm thinking of some major best selling authors) do not.

Not to give away any plots, but the main character is 21 year old Justin de Quincy, a young man with an interesting background, who is a fictional character, and who through a series of accidents and coincidences in the first De Quincy book, "The Queen's Man" becomes a spy or secret agent for Queen Eleanor. All the following books have that as the main focus, as Justin is sent on various dangerous trips or projects for the Queen of England. At this point in time King Richard the LionHearted IS in captivity, held by his enemies. His younger brother John is one of those, as he of course (and true to history) wants his brother's crown. Justin de Quincy's travels and the various mysteries have to do with his trying to help the Queen, as asked, to save her favorite son, Richard.

No, these are not great books, and Penman is more a Historical Fiction than a true mystery author, but she is a good writer, and I enjoyed all the DeQuincy books so far.

So far they are, in order (which is how they should be read)
"The Queen's Man" The Queen's Man A Medieval Mystery (Medieval Mysteries)
"Cruel as the Grave"Cruel as the Grave
"Dragon's Lair"Dragon's Lair (Ballantine Reader's Circle)
"Prince of Darkness"Prince of Darkness (A Medieval Mystery)

Are (and again, need to be read in order)can be found on the Sharon Kay Penman "page" or may be easier to Google to get the right order. The order you should look for is the YEAR in which the book takes place; NOT the year Penman wrote it. She goes from the 1100's to the 1400's, so, obviously, there are changes in main characters, the major events, wars, and so on.....Essentially there are two or three trilogies in the "Historical Fiction" books, which are all quite lengthy, but really worth it. to those who love history and want to read well written, lively books.
