This is another stand-alone in her 'Magical Romantic Comedy with a body count' series. It isn't necessary to have read the other ones in the series to enjoy this one, since, aside from being set in the same universe, there is no character overlap. Some Christians might be offended by the version of Hell and Heaven in this universe - but I liked it. Instead of standing for Good and Evil - they are more like the opposing forces of Order and Chaos, and if either side gains too much power the upset of the established balance will lead to the "End of Days" and - consequently - the death and rebirth of the universe.
This story very light heartily deals with the Devil being forced to become creative to prevent a coup by some his high-level devils from triggering the "End of Days," without breaking any of the rules he is bound by (which would trigger the event he is trying to prevent.)
In order to accomplish that he tricks Kanika, a small time mercenary - who's claim to fame is being able to shift into five different Egypt themed forms (from human to sphinx, with three cat themed in-between forms) - into getting involved against her better judgement.
Hilarity ensues.
This story is very much along the lines of "Playing with Fire" by the same author, and if you liked the one, I'm willing to bet you will like the other.

Whatever for Hire A Magical Romantic Comedy with a body count edition by RJ Blain Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
WELL. I read it and I finished it. Was it good? If I'm being honest? No. And certainly not worth paying nearly 5 dollars to buy. The writing and storytelling are on par with below average KU self published works that have never seen a competent editor.
What were the problems? Well, it started off well. The heroine is competent and smart. AT TIMES. Her luck isn't great. But... her judgement frankly sucks. She knows its stupid to make a deal with the devil, but she does it. Multiple times.
But I was onboard because I liked her. And I liked the hero when I met him. But... that's when it all started to go wrong. The author doesn't know how to write romantic tension, and create a slow burn. She tries to, but fails. The couple is attracted to each other and then.... lots of pages (most of the book) go by where I can tell the author is TRYING to show tension (she keeps having the heroine sleep walk and end up in the hero's bed) but frankly failing. Then the couple consummate. All off screen. So, okay, the author didn't want to write an explicit scene but there are ways to do that well. The author did not accomplish this.
Now let's talk about realistic reactions and world building. I read the whole book and still couldn't tell you much about the world or magic or how any of it works. Magic ebbs and flows from this world every millennia or so. Look the the dragons to tell you when these tides will go in and out. Most of the people in the world are touched by magic somehow. God, the devil, the angels, demons, and Ma'at are real. And... that's it. That's all I've got. Not a whole lot is it? You know why? The heroine has no curiosity and fails to ask vital questions that would streamline the convoluted plot. Great characteristic for you main character right?
Here's an example you are given an assignment to kidnap a guy. For NO reason at all, you do not ASK the guy hiring you who the target is exactly so you can research him. So, what happens? You waste your time staying up all night trying to figure out who he is. Then you spend MORE than you are going to earn for the job (MORE) buying weapons, intel and equipment preparing for the job (again, the heroine's poor judgement). You know that most people in the world are not human. You are told by the guy hiring you that the target needs water to survive. And when it all goes down and the target become your ally but you NEVER EVER EVER just LOOK at him and say, "by the way, you know what kind of creature I am. WTF are you?" Nope. She never asks. Oooh, and he is also cursed. You know what we didn't find out-- not even at the end of this book? What the curse was. REALLY? She never asked! Some CAT. I have 7. Curiosity is a besetting quirk.
And then there is the overall plot. Talk about convoluted like a meandering toddler telling you a story about how he, the dogs and your kitchen ended up covered in flour and salt and set on fire after being left alone by the babysitter. It was hard to tell who the bad guys were because there were so many possibilities (none were explored or investigated by the heroine AT ALL, no curiosity remember) and all of them seemed to be under consideration until...over half the book has gone by and we are told this organization is the bad guy. We never have a name or a face. We never feel, in any way shape or form, invested in foiling their plans or defeating them. And it is COMPLETELY beyond me why the heroine instead of the omniscient people around her-- who having been running this planet for millennia-- is the one that is on the front lines of fighting this threat.
The whole book was a mess. But I finished it. And I will NOT be reading another book by this author again. That that is a definition of a 2 star review.
I am ashamed to tell y’all the truth.... but I snorted. I Laughed. I Giggled. Then I immediately went and bought the next book. Perhaps it’s because I like cats. It could be the snark tho. I really like snark. Ok enough, on to the review.
This book made my morning. It was fun, silly, a bit convoluted, but that just made it a little better. Strong characters ~ I think I might be a little in love with Satin. I’m still trying to imagine how Michael and Gabriel look. I’m also trying to figure out Hagnar. There is something more to him. Guess I’ll find out in book 2.
However, this novel was actually very thought provoking if you can get past the silliness. What is free will? What are good and evil? Who determines the definitions? Can evil love? Can good lead to death and destruction of innocence? Is the road to hell paved with good intentions?
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Whatever For Hire is possibly one of the best paranormal books I've read! I've loved this series since it started and each book just seems to get better and better. There is humor, romance, action, A LOT of magical beings, and a lot of magic. Now while I love everything about mythology I have only barely touched Egyptian mythology. RJ Blain always seems to have the traditional myths but with a twist of her own originality thrown in that makes it so much fun!
Kanika is an absolute trip! I love her so much. I still have a TON of questions about her and her heritage, I'm hoping they get answered in a later book. Kanika isn't even sure what she is. She's a human, a Bastet lookalike, a cat, a sphinx, and more. She is a complete badass and I want to be her when I grow up. Malcolm is sexy as sin. Fitting really when Kanika has the unwanted attentions of THE devil. Malcolm keeps me guessing throughout the entire book. He's funny and so smart. Just not smart enough to realize pissing off Kanika is a bad move. These two together could conquer the world if need be.
The story is a fun adventure. I love how I never know what I'll get in these books, yet enjoy them immediately. The writing is different, but a good different. I get lost within the pages quite easily. The characters are aggravating and completely amazing. I loved every single one we met. I also love how much of a survivor Kanika is. She has some tough decisions, but she usually comes out on top.
This is definitely a book in which you will get lost for hours in. One you won't want to put down or end.
