Threshold A Chance Matthews Novel Caitlin R Kiernan 9780451461247 Books

I found Threshold to be a strange work, and not one I would ever feel the need to read again. The story excels at style and subtle world-building, weaving a tapestry of moonlight and cigarette smoke. Reading this book feels like walking through the deep South, high on bath salts and drunk on moonshine, while being pursued by a passive aggressive Demon who is strolling along at the speed of an energetic snail.

Yet at the same time, the book fails at other avenues. It is flawless in terms of mood, tone and aesthetics, but in terms of plot, it is quite lacking. And while I'm all for a slow-burn, nothing happens in this story. And I understand the author wants to take a more thoughtful approach and not go whole-hog on the supernatural from the start, but when you do that, you can't just abandon us in downtown Birmingham and expect us to make our own fun.

So I found the story to be frustrating. If you like slow-burn and just cannot read enough surreal urban fantasy, then I recommend it. But if anything here sounds like a deal breaker, skip this one.

Threshold A Chance Matthews Novel Caitlin R Kiernan 9780451461247 Books Reviews

Caitlin R. Kiernan's elegant, creepydark fantasy is stunning proof that a writer can seldom go wrong writing about what she knows. She is, according to the biography on the inside back cover, "trained as a vertebrate paleontologist," who lives in Birmingham, AL. The story takes place there, and fossils certainly figure prominently in this, her second novel, which deals with things that may be lurking inside a water tunnel in the southern city.
In Kiernan's tale of the real and yet imagined Birmingham (also the locale of her first novel, the equally stunning "Silk"), which evokes Beowulf and Alice, to say nothing of Lovecraft (and Jung?) things can go bump in the day as often as at night-maybe more often. In fact, its chilliest passages involve heat and sun and dust and thirst, and psychotic birds that crash into windows. And you'll surely become enthralled with the doings of Chance, Deacon, Sadie, and Dancy.
All this would get a four-star rating for the tale. But what makes it worth five is the author's evocative dreamysmooth writing style. Words seem to tumble out Kiernan. She writes like a poet, not a paleontologist.
It's best read in the morning, before you forget your dreams, and perhaps with Kristin Hersh's "Strange Angels" on your CD player.
The only other horror I've read in the past few years was "Silk" (also by Kiernan). Her writing has vastly improved since her last novel (and it was quite good to begin with!). This story is layers of mythology, science, and poetry - stratum stacked up until I found myself trying to read slower and slower so the story wouldn't end despite the fact that I was reading faster and faster because this story is a page turner. Her poetic prose had me reciting lines to anyone who would listen while I read. PLUS, how can you go wrong with a story that has trilobites in it?! Loved it all around - even the beautiful cover.
My only gripes are the monsters don't take a more obvious role in the story soon enough for me - but this is a story of subtleness with creatures of insinuation and patience. I also wished the trilobites would have had a more prominent role.
One of the best books I've read in the last year (which was just under 50 last year)!
It is also refreshing to read fiction of any sort and have the author know what they are talking about when it comes to the science - a rare commodity these days!!
Wonderful story that keeps you guessing throughout. A unique premise that the author has displayed in other novels. When she aims for a feeling of nameless dread, she hits the mark and reveals the under story slowly, like a a curtain being raised. I love stories like this where you feel like you are about to be let in on a strange secret that is just out of sight and understanding.
Is all of humankind's digging for fossil a good thing or can it lead to monsters that haunt our dreams and our livings? This question drives Kiernan's story about a geological grad student who recently lost her best friend and her grandfather who raised her. But their deaths are tied to the death of her grandmother and the deaths of two old women deep in the swamps of Florida. The characters are well drawn, and I really couldn't get enough of Chase, though I could have done with less time on her ex-bf. Still, his actions are pivotal.

An imaginative story, good fear raising, nice writing and setting, and good character development. You're drawn into this world which is so weird and yet familiar, and it has so many surprises. A great read.
I liked Threshold better than Silk, her first novel, but it still doesn't compare to her last two novels (The Red Tree, The Drowning Girl). Which is okay, I guess, after all she has grown as a writer and that's a good thing. Judging Threshold on its own merits, it's a pretty good read, not perfect by any means, but not all that horrible either. The first half of the novel is way too slow. The story picks up in the second half, as if the author remembered that there's supposed to be a plot halfway through the book. The first half introduces us to the four main characters. I liked Sadie and Deacon. Chance and Dancy? Not so much. Some of the paleontological stuff in the novel was a pain to read. Thankfully there wasn't much of it. The second half of the novel all the good stuff starts to happen. It kept me entertained. The ending was a bit weak, but I was ready for it because of the other reviews. The only thing that seemed kind of off about the second half is that the author was trying way too hard to be scary, but not succeeding at all (at least for me). I liked it anyway, because I wasn't looking for a scary read in the first place. I'll definitely read Low Red Moon (the sequel to this novel) next, because despite some of my problems with Silk and Threshold, there's still something about her writing that I like very much.

Here is how I would rate the four novels I've read by this author

Silk (3 stars)
Threshold (3 and a 1/2 stars)
The Red Tree (5 stars) - start here if you're new to her work
The Drowning Girl (5 stars)
